Out of Office

gran-bahia-principe-akumal

I am happy to say that this is where I will be until July 5th.

It will be my first Mexico wedding, and I’m so thrilled to have the chance to spend it with such a fantastic couple. So, with baby and husband/assistant and mother/babysitter in tow….we’re off to paradise. And how incredibly perfect that this couple will be getting married the day before our 6th wedding anniversary, so we’ll get to celebrate the memories of our own wedding while we’re there.

I greatly apologize if there’s a delay in responding to your email/phone calls, but I will have very limited phone & internet access from my beach palapa. :)

I will reply to all messages as soon as possible upon my return!

Deb & Sean in Whistler

2 blog posts in 1 day!

This may be a little longer than my average post, and the reason is twofold:

1. I’ve been so busy this season that on the list of priorities, blogging is the first thing to fall behind. So this will be my way of kickstarting 2010 with lots of images and a fresh start.

2. Deb & Sean were so fantastic that I can’t narrow it down to just a few shots. They’re so full of life and love,  and hopefully that shows through in their photos.

Sean moved here from Australia to be with Deb, so it was so great for them to have a day with all their family & friends together in one place. They even rented 2 big chalets to house everyone (including David and I!), and held the simple but raucous after-party there as well. (I have some Australian family, I know how they party!)

What a fun day.

The ceremony was held in the backyard of the chalet.

Clearly their dogs are not excluded from the dress code.

Having the crazy wedding party nearby can sometimes break up the mood of the more intimate photos, but with these guys that was part of the fun. I loved the couple’s resulting reaction shots.

Now let’s get serious. :)

And it wouldn’t be a Whistler wedding without a trip up the gondola!

Even when you have a professional photographer with you, it’s still hard to resist. I would’ve done the same.

Walking from the gondola back through Whistler Village was probably my favourite part of the day. These two and their posse were like rock stars coming through town!

Sweet reactions like this lined the streets.

The wedding party stops for a drink in The Mountain Club lounge before joining the rest of the guests for dinner. The restaurant went above and beyond to make this event everything they’d hoped for.

debsean_wed595blog

Following dinner were speeches, desserts, dancing, and plenty of beer back at the chalet. Followed then by more dancing and more beer at a club. I hear there is photographic evidence of this last part, and I’m a little scared. :)

Thanks Deb & Sean for being such a great couple to get to know throughout the last year. David & I felt so lucky to be invited to document the day for you.

Happy New Year!

Well, it’s been quite an incredible year. I’m so grateful to the amazing clients/friends and fellow photographers who’ve made it possible.

2010 is shaping up to be a very big year for Wink Photography, and for me personally.

This week, David and I are off to Nashville to attend the annual Digital Wedding Forum Convention. Last year the convention was in the hot January sun of Phoenix, but I’ve always wanted to see the southern states so this is still a big treat for me (even in the snow). It’s four solid days of learning, networking, sourcing out new products and services…and maybe a little dancing. I’m once again looking forward to coming back with some exciting new ideas and products to share with my couples for 2010.

I’m also looking forward to our last four days which will be spent as tourists, and staying at the Union Station Hotel. A converted 1900s train station with jaw-dropping architecture. Also, one of the top 20 US Haunted Hotels!

In other 2010 news….

Last summer we did some serious new home searching (it’s not easy to find space + affordability in Vancouver!), and found a fabulous condo that will be completed hopefully within the next month. Finally, we’ll have a studio and meeting space in our home. Photos to come!

And speaking of rooms, when we bought this 3 bedroom place we thought we’d have our bedroom, a studio, and a guestroom…but it turns out guests will now have to camp out on the terrace….since it’s going to be a baby room instead! We’re definitely looking forward to this new adventure, and my due date of May 5th is quickly approaching!

Luckily the timing has also worked out well…so I won’t be accepting any weddings in May/early June this year, but the rest of the wedding season won’t be affected. I’m 5 1/2 months right now, but am still continuing to take on engagement sessions and such until (hopefully) March 1st.

If you’re interested in booking this year, don’t delay because July and August are filling up fast!

I’ll leave you with one of my favourite ads from PPABC’s (Professional Photographers Assoc of BC)  2009 ad campaign. Happy 2010 everyone!

The land of summer!

David and I decided on the spur of the moment last week that we deserved a little getaway. It was our 5 year wedding anniversary (even though it seems like just yesterday!), so we did some online research Saturday night, and left for our Okanagan resort Sunday morning. Of course we were then very proud of ourselves for still being spontaneous and adventurous after all these years together! Dorks.

Anyone who’s ever traveled with me knows that doing so is no easy task. I’m usually loaded down with 1 or more cameras and 2 or more lenses at all times, and my frequent shouting of “Wait! Pull over here!” tends to make each point A to B take much longer than most people enjoy.

Luckily, though, I’ve found an excellent travel companion in David. Not only does he enjoy the little things like I do, but if he’s not taking photos, I can often keep him occupied reading plaques. For example, last year when we visited Quebec city, I spent the whole time being amazed while looking through the lens at all these gorgeous old buildings, while he read to me about the historical significance of each one.

Anyway! So here we were in the Okanagan, and decided to not let taking photos take over the trip. So, some of the photos you see here are just with the little point & shoot, many are not perfect, but we really loved our time just enjoying eachother, some great food, and perhaps a little wine.

The view from our patio at the Summerland Lakeside Resort.

Over the last couple years we’ve become huge fans of kayaking. What a gorgeous place to do it.

The other thing I tend to get carried away with on vacations is research.

img_4729blog

Now onto some wineries! This is Hijas Bonitas. Boy was this place was stunning. Just a small family run winery, but beautiful grounds and amazing wine. David is seen here drinking a glass of their new pinot noir that they’ve poured straight from the barrel. Hasn’t even been bottled yet! We also adopted the Okanagan way of not eating in restaurants, but instead bringing a little picnic to a winery and just ordering a glass of wine to go with it. Heaven!

_mg_2150mspblog

They’ve also started hosting weddings and events on site in their beautiful building overlooking the vineyard and the lake. And yes, that’s a helicopter down by the water. What a way to make an entrance!

_mg_2157mspblog

Okay, so the cameras don’t get put down for THAT long…

_mg_2155mspblog

img_4686blog

Sadly, even as photographers, 99% of the photos of us as a couple still involve me holding the camera out. We tend to like it that way though. Even when people see us doing it and ask if they can take a picture for us, I still say “No, thank you!”.

dsc02038msp

Another one of our wine and picnic adventures at the Road 13 vineyard.

img_4715blog

But then the cloud rolled in! Oh no!

img_2169blog

Next over to Dirty Laundry. I mentioned something to the woman at the vineyard about loving their logo, and she said, “It’s great, isn’t it! You know that’s not just steam….right?” It took me a while, but I finally saw the hidden meaning. Boy did I feel silly.

img_4689blog

Another thing I love to photograph is random old vehicles. If I could’ve added a bride into this scene, I would’ve been set! This one is at See Ya Later Ranch. Their chardonnay is to die for.

Another favourite thing: vineyard dogs.

dsc02058cx5

And who doesn’t love a little ice cream break on the side of the highway. Thanks to Cathy for the recommendation!

So that pretty much sums it up. It was a very happy anniversary, and I’m looking forward to many more.

Now back to work!

Girls Weekend in Toronto!

My fabulous friend Leanne and I took a last minute trip to Toronto for the long weekend, to visit our other fabulous friend Sarah. Sarah defected to Toronto 2 years ago, and since then, girl gossip time has been sadly lacking. Leanne is now almost 5 months pregnant, and decided this would be her last chance to get in a little vacation without a diaper bag.

First stop: Little Italy for some late night dessert and champagne (or ginger ale). I didn’t bring my flash on this trip, so it was fun to test the limits of my lens and the high ISOs on my beloved Canon 5d.

Back at the loft, Sarah cooks up an amazing meal. I wish I had that natural talent.

Sarah’s beautiful doggy friend, Kyle.

torontoweb05

Niagara wine, fine cheeses, good friends….the best.

torontoweb11

We decided to splurge one night on a suite at the famous Royal York Hotel. Luxury!

Somehow, at midnight we decided a top model photo shoot was necessary.

Sarah is Naomi Campbell, and I am her assistant.

torontoweb20

Leanne’s husband advised her that no pillowfights were allowed in her condition, since of course that’s what all women do when they get together.

A highlight of the trip for me was once again being in Toronto for the Contact Photography Festival. One of my favourite spots in the city, the Gladstone Hotel, is one of the venues. On some floors, a different artist displays their work in each hotel room, and on others, the rooms are occupied by hotel guests, but the hallways are lined with art.

I realized when I got home that this may be the only proof that I was on the trip.

I love taking advantage of gorgeous architechture and window light….and of course a new belly.

torontoweb38

Out for a stroll on Queen West.

torontoweb41

I just liked this blue mailbox. That’s all.

torontoweb40

And lastly, a few impromptu colourful shots in the alley.

Thanks my ladies! Much love!
