Wink Photography Vancouver Wedding Photographer

Hi there! I’m Jana.

Choosing a photographer is one of the most important decisions when planning your wedding. You want to make sure you’re choosing a photographer whose work you connect with, but just as importantly, whose personality you connect with. I know it’s not easy to get a good feel for who somebody is through a website, but hopefully through reading about my experiences and my stories, you can get a peek into my life. I hope that with this blog I can give brides & grooms, their friends and family, and everyone out there a better idea of who I am and what I love to do.

Wedding photography is my passion. It’s my dream job, and I love what I do. I do, after all, get to spend most of my weekends celebrating with gorgeous, glowing people on one of the biggest days of their lives. I like to think that that passion shows through my work, and in the relationships we form. I believe in creating fun, fresh and honest images filled with emotion that tell the true story of your wedding day. Send me an email at jana@winkphotography.ca to tell me more about yourself and what you’re looking for. I can’t wait to hear more about your big day!

Interaction is welcome, so please don’t be shy! I hope to hear from you. Happy perusing!

Art For Life 2011 | Fundraising Event

The wedding photography business in Vancouver is fairly seasonal, so winter often provides a bit of downtime. The wedding photography business in Vancouver is fairly seasonal, so winter often provides a bit of downtime. It’s how we’re able to breathe a little and catch up on things like blogging, marketing, branding, (personal lives!), etc. One of the other things it’s nice to have time for in the off-season is giving time to a non-profit organization as special as Friends for Life.

The Vancouver Friends for Life Society supports people living with life-threatening illnesses, their families and their caregivers. It was formed with the belief that no-one should face a serious illness alone, and offers a broad range of complementary and integrative therapies aimed at shifting the focus from illness to wellness. . The wonderful ‘Diamond Centre for Living’ in the West End provides a warm home-like environment for people; it’s an amazing thing this organization is doing.

Their annual Art For Life fine art auction showcases a fabulous collection of contemporary art and 100% of all art sales benefit Friends for Life.  This year featured some awesome live performances as well. With a line-up consisting of Public Dreams (behind Illuminares and Parade of Lost Souls), a drag show featuring 6 of the best performers this city has to offer, and finally a live set by Bif Naked. What a fun night for a good cause.

Public Dreams performance. It turned into an awesome community art project, and the dress became one of the artworks that was auctioned off as well!

Vancouver’s top drag queens never disappoint.

My lovely assistant/husband David was also there to run the photobooth. The backdrop was the auction’s gorgeous signature piece by Andrew Salgado .

(The piece caused a bidding war that escalated to over $10,000!)

If you’re interested in how you can support Friends For Life, please visit http://www.friendsforlife.ca/give-gift. Whether it’s donations, volunteering, or services you can provide…it’s all much needed, and much appreciated.

(And a very simple way to help the organization is to eat at one of hundreds of participating restaurants during Dining Out For Life! Who doesn’t love dinner.)

Ellen & Julian | Married – Delta Hotel Richmond

Ellen & Julian’s wedding was the first Jewish wedding I have photographed/attended, and after theirs I hope there are plenty more to come. It was one of the most fun nights of my life… and I was working!

A Jewish wedding day is truly an amazing experience from beginning to end. A perfect mix of ancient tradition and uninhibited fun. Ellen took the time to sit down and teach me not just about what was going to happen, but why. They pulled off a beautifully personal blend of honouring ancient customs, while still making the day their own. It was a (long!) day I’ll never forget.

It all began at the bride’s family home:

Off to Steveston Shipyards for some “first look” portrait time. No official wedding party = lots of cozy couple time.

The B’deken. An intimate ceremony witnessed by the closest family & friends where the Ketubah & civil documents are signed.

Julian places the veil over Ellen’s face, signifying his commitment to clothe and protect his wife.

The wedding ceremony. The Chuppah symbolizes the home that the couple will build together. It’s open on all sides to welcome friends and relatives with unconditional hospitality. The bride circles the groom 7 times to envelop him in her protective care. The number 7, paralleling the 7 days of creation, symbolizes the fact that the couple are about to create their own new world.

(The ceremony was shot in low light with no flash, as requested by the couple, to protect the intimacy of the event)

The Sheva Brachot (or 7 blessings) mark the completion of the wedding ceremony and are recited over a cup of wine. (Now that’s my kind of blessing! wedding Ellen & Julian | Married Delta Hotel Richmond )

The guests enjoy cocktail hour while the lovely couple and I sneak out for a few more portraits. And I’m so glad we did!

Now this is when things get really interesting. The Hora takes the wedding reception to a whole new level of fun.

I love playing photographic name-that-tune when I edit the photos after the wedding. Any guesses? wedding Ellen & Julian | Married Delta Hotel Richmond

I was warned ahead of time that Ellen’s good friend might break out in a ‘sexy dance’ for her at some point in the reception. It was epic.

At midnight we packed up and headed home, but the party was showing no sign of slowing. Always a good sign.

It’s the time of year when I carry my camera (not just my iphone) with me everywhere.  So I’m even more excited when my clients want photo shoots in the fall, keeps me from just wandering aimlessly taking pictures of leaves.

Amy made one of these images her Facebook profile photo this week, mentioning that it had been exactly 1 year since we did this shoot….and I realized this blog post had slipped through the cracks! I photographed Amy & Tyler’s wedding almost 3 years ago, and we became instant friends. And I’m so excited to have our little ones born only 1 day apart, who can become great friends too.

Carly & Damon – Grouse Mountain Wedding

I’m a big fan of the ‘first look’. Seeing eachother before the ceremony comes in especially handy with a venue like Grouse Mountain, because once you’re up there you don’t exactly want to be leaving for pictures and coming back. Carly and Damon are urbanites and wanted their photos to be a reflection of that.
