Brix + Mortar Wedding in Vancouver
Courtney & Patrick got trapped in the Covid-wedding-uncertainty-scramble that many other couples did in 2020/2021. “Are we having a big wedding? Are we eloping? Are restrictions over? Can we have a destination wedding? Will we ever be able to get married at all?” It was a frustrating back and forth that I sadly had to witness firsthand with so many couples. (Although I’m pleased to report that my Covid uncertainty couples are all finally happily married now). Courtney & Patrick had planned a Dominican destination wedding which kept getting postponed, then they finally had to consider other options. What they finally settled on was a 20 person, socially distanced, Brix & Mortar wedding in Vancouver. Local and small was the smartest option, in case restrictions changed again before the big day.
I sure hope we never have to experience a pandemic in this way again, and looking back on these photos can just remain a visual summary of 2021, not the beginning of a repeating cycle. Hopefully seeing masks in wedding photos will scream 2021, the way the puffy-sleeved gowns scream late 80’s. No dancing, no mingling, plexi dividers…none of it was optimal. But they were still able to celebrate their commitment with their closest people, in a time that otherwise felt so isolating.
I think Courtney’s very rational view on the experience is great advice for weddings in general, not just during Covid. “Go into it with an open mind; plans change and you need to be adaptable and know everything may not be exactly as you hoped/planned but that’s okay.”
I’m so glad I got to be there for them in documenting this crazy moment in time, even though it was while in a mask on the hottest (40 degrees!) day of the year.
